The English Patient (പുസ്തകവും സിനിമയും)

Put down the gun, Kip.
He slams his back against the wall and stops his shaking. Plaster dust in the air around them.
I sat at the foot of this bed and listened to you, Uncle. These last months. When I was a kid I did that, the same thing. I believed I could fill myself up with what older people taught me. I believed I could carry that knowledge, slowly altering it, but in any case passing it beyond me to another.
I grew up with traditions from my country, but later, more often, from your country. Your fragile white island that with customs and manners and books and prefects and reason some¬how converted the rest of the world. You stood for precise behaviour. I knew if I lifted a teacup with the wrong finger I’d be banished. If I tied the wrong kind of knot in a tie I was out. Was it just ships that gave you such power? Was it, as my brother said, because you had the histories and printing presses?
You and then the Americans converted us. With your mis¬sionary rules. And Indian soldiers wasted their lives as heroes so they could be pukkah. You had wars like cricket. How did you fool us into this? Here... listen to what you people have done.
He throws the rifle on the bed and moves towards the Eng¬lishman. The crystal set is at his side, hanging off his belt. He unclips it and puts the earphones over the black head of the patient, who winces at the pain on his scalp. But the sapper leaves them on him. Then he walks back and picks up the rifle. He sees Hana at the door.

One bomb. Then another. Hiroshima. Nagasaki...

...Caravaggio sits down in the chair. He is always, he thinks, sitting in this chair. In the room there is the thin squawking from the crystal set, the radio still speaking in its underwater voice. He cannot bear to turn and look at the sapper or look towards the blur of Hana’s frock. He knows the young soldier is right. They would never have dropped such a bomb on a white nation.

  1. Well, there is hardly anything to be surprised in it. When a westerner tries to tell the story, he would make modification that he think just and that might or might not justify to the original novel. But, I would say the movie is good and has artistic merit.

Looking into the history of hollywood films, we can see a huge list of film which has portrayed an entirely west-biased history (both fact and fiction). And, what hollywood has been so successful is in avoiding attention from those few films which portray true facts.

I don't have an argument on the fact that the film has got a number of academy awards. But, I would support the film on the basis that it was well recieved in film circles and even nominated for golden berlin bear. I liked it a lot myself, including the climax.

Now, as far the question of whether or not 'Michael Ondatje should continue to write', seriously don't you think you are too silly to question the credibility of such an eminent writer. And, I don't think one has to judge the writer based on whether or not he agreed to make a different version of his novel to be made into a film.

    1. I most certainly know the kind of shit that happens in hollywood. I mentioned this because they CHOSE to make a movie out of a novel and avoided the essence of it. There was no reason to do it. They could just continue making the usual shit like Mission Impossible or Airforce One. America rules.
That Ondaatje should stop writing was metaphorical. If he is a writer who could stand the essence of his novel being turned into the usual American shit right in front of his eyes then it means that he was not true to whatever he wrote. A writer who is not true to themselves is no good to the vocation. That's my opinion.
